The method involves predetermining a desired value for an air-fuel ratio of the fuel injection for an operating point. The lambda value of an exhaust gas of the combustion is recorded for observation of the air-fuel ratio. The adaptation value is applied corresponding to the positioning for correction of the pilot control of the fuel injection or air mass. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a method for controlling a fuel injection of an internal combustion engine; and (2) a device for determining an adaptation value for an air-fuel ratio for a fuel injection into an internal combustion engine.
