PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection optical system can obtain a compact projector body (a lens system and a reflective surface excluding a screen) and installation stability, being used for both front projection type and rear projection type, and sufficiently providing merits in cost. SOLUTION: The projection optical system 1 includes the projector body 2 having one of conjugate planes and a screen 105 as the other of the conjugate planes. The projector body 2 is provided with an image forming element 101 and reflective surfaces 103, 104 constituting a first optical system 102 and a second optical system. The reflective surface 103 is a reflective surface having positive power, the normal 107 from the center of an image projected on a screen 105 does not intersect with any of the first optical system, the second optical system, and the space between the first optical system and the second optical system, and a light beam intersects with YZ plane only once after the light beam is emitted from the first optical system before incident on the other of the conjugate planes, where the YZ plane is a plane defined by the up-and-down direction of the image and the direction in which the normal 107 extends.
