PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary kiln sludge drying apparatus capable of preventing spontaneous ignition in the drying apparatus when stopping a sludge drying operation of the drying apparatus, performing a stopping process safely and facilitating a next-time starting process of the drying apparatus, and to provide a safely stopping method of the rotary kiln sludge drying apparatus. SOLUTION: The safely stopping method of the rotary kiln sludge drying apparatus which is provided with: a sludge charging port and a combustion gas-introducing port used for drying sludge disposed on the inlet side of a rotary kiln main body provided with a sludge stirring shaft inserted along the rotation drum axial direction; and a dried material discharge port and a drying exhaust gas outlet for discharging drying exhaust gas produced in the drying of the sludge respectively disposed on the main body outlet side, is provided, wherein, in a sludge drying operation stopping process of the drying apparatus, the driving of the rotation drum is stopped while leaving dehydrated sludge in the middle of drying in a machine by stepwise or continuously reducing the amount of volume adjustment of the combustion gas and the charging amount of the hydrated sludge from the sludge charging port in accordance with an outlet exhaust gas temperature on the drying device.
