PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a drive controller for vehicle which eliminates the need for turn-on/interruption operation of a permanent magnet motor when switching the operation, and reduces the DC voltage during inverter operation. SOLUTION: An electric power converter for vehicle includes a converter 6 for receiving electric power from a power supply system 1 and obtaining a DC voltage, a capacitor 8 connected with the output of the converter 6, an inverter 7 for transforming the DC voltage of the capacitor 8 into an AC voltage, and a permanent magnet motor 9 connected with the inverter 7 through switches 10-12. The voltage of the capacitor 8 is raised by the converter 5 when coasting operation is started and then operation of the inverter 7 is stopped, and the voltage of the capacitor 8 is higher than a voltage generated from the permanent magnet motor 9.
