An apparatus and a method for communicating a multicast and broadcast service map message in a broadband wireless communication system are provided to reduce the overhead caused by the MBS map message and to configure the MBS map message by using the periodicity of an MBS data burst. An MBS(Multicast and Broadcast Service) map message is generated periodically(307), and includes the burst allocation information for at least one MBS channel having different kinds of transmission periods. The generated MBS map message is transmitted from a corresponding frame having different setup period. A broadcast message is broadcasted to a terminal(309), and includes the transmission period information of the MBS map message.
