The invention relates to a process for producing a catalyst for the catalytic combustion of hydrocarbons, in particular methane, wherein: a hexaaluminate of the formula MO.6Al2O3, where M is at least one alkaline earth metal and the at least one alkaline earth metal and the aluminum can also be partly replaced by at least one other metal, is prepared; and the hexaaluminate is milled to an average particle size D50 of less than 3 mum. The invention further relates to a catalyst as can be obtained by the process of the invention, a catalytic burner containing the catalyst and a fuel cell arrangement comprising the catalytic burners.
