The method involves automatically reading out data carriers (12) by a reading head (19). A description of type e.g. color, of consumable material e.g. toner, is transferred to a controller (21) and again transferred from the controller to a printing server (2) connected with a printing device (3), where the server includes a data set describing configuration of the device. The description of the type is included in the data set. A printing order received at the server is verified to check whether the order agrees with the configuration of the device, and the order is transferred to the device. An independent claim is also included for a printing system comprising a computer.
