PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lens driving device that can perform appropriate searching operation, and to provide an imaging apparatus. SOLUTION: The lens driving device includes: a focus detection means 161 for detecting the focusing state of a lens 211 provided to be driven in a predetermined range along an optical axis L1 direction based on luminous flux passing through the lens 211; a position detection means 260 for detecting the position of the lens; a driving means 165 for performing the searching operation to perform focus detection by the focus detection means while driving the lens if it is impossible to perform the focus detection by the focus detection means; and a control means 170 for controlling whether or not to permit the searching operation in accordance with the position of the lens detected by the position detection means.
