PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an iron based sintered alloy having excellent strength and toughness, and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The iron based sintered alloy includes a sintered compact obtained in such a manner that a powdery mixture obtained by mixing raw material powders mixed with one or more coarse powders composed of pure iron or an iron alloy and one or more fine powders composed of pure iron or an iron alloy and having the average particle diameter smaller than that of the coarse powders is press-molded, so as to be a powder molded body, and the powder molded body is heated and sintered, wherein the molded body is the high density one in which the average particle diameter (d) of the fine powders, the average particle diameter (D) of the coarse powders and the blending amount of the fine powders are regulated to predetermined ranges. This iron based sintered alloy includes high strength and high toughness, and further includes excellent fatigue strength, and the application of the iron based sintered alloy is expanded.
