The method involves defining an operating area of the coordinate measuring device, which depends on the position of a movable element, particularly on a position of an alignment, on a speed and an acceleration of the movable element. A haptic signal is issued to the user on reaching or crossing a boundary of the operating area. The haptic signal is noticed by the user during manual control of the movable element.
