<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus highly reliable in cartridge life and power consumption by immediately detecting the problem of an operation immediately before stopping and an operation immediately after starting in each development separation position, thereby instantly stopping the body of the image forming apparatus in the event of failure in a development separation operation. <P>SOLUTION: An annular rib-shape is formed in a member synchronized with the development separation operation. In addition, the annular rib shape has slits of different widths formed so as to correspond to the development separation positions.
