<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data processing apparatus capable of simply performing dividing processing and decoding from a specified dividing position. <P>SOLUTION: If an editing indication is received from an operation unit, the apparatus designates an I picture that has a PTS with minimum n located behind the PTS of a displayed picture, as a temporal starting end TSNm (dividing specified position). Then, the dividing position of a stream is determined based on: the designated dividing specified position; the bit rate of the stream; and the worst number of packets for acquiring a PAT, a PMT, and a SIT. The stream is divided at the determined dividing position.
