PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device in which: strength against force on the face is improved; and the occurrence of bubbles in vacuum caused due to insufficient contraction of a cell gap that follows contraction of a liquid crystal is prevented; and a range of an optimal dropping amount of a liquid crystal during forming a liquid crystal layer is widened. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device 10 has a first substrate 2 and a second substrate 1 disposed opposite to each other and holding a liquid crystal layer 11 therebetween, wherein a plurality of columnar spacers 13 to hold a gap between the element substrate 1 and the counter substrate 2 are disposed on a face in the liquid crystal layer 11 side of the first substrate 2, while on a face in the liquid crystal layer 11 side of the second substrate 1, spacer receiving parts 16 are disposed in the regions placed opposite to the respective columnar spacers 13. The liquid crystal device 10 includes, as the spacer receiving parts 16, contact receiving parts 16a in contact with columnar spacers 13a and non-contact receiving parts 16b not in contact with columnar spacers 13b.
