PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an offset determination method capable of surely determining occurrence of offset only through a document read processing even without recording images on a paper sheet, thereby suppressing the waste of recording paper sheets and a recording processing time from being increased, and to provide an image processing apparatus. SOLUTION: First image data are captured by prescanning while being a sheet body provided on a platen glass side of a platen cover is made white, and second image data are captured by prescanning while being the sheet body is made black (S1, S2). Differential image data between the first image data and the second image data are determined (S3) and the number of pixels, of each of which the pixel value is greater than a threshold (THa), is counted in the differential image data (S4). In a case where a count value (C) is equal to or greater than a first threshold (THb) (S5:NO) and smaller than or equal to a second threshold (THc) (S6:NO), namely, in a case where the count value (C) is settled within a predetermined range (THb≤C≤THc), "offset generation" is determined (S9).
