PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a non-contact scanner equipped with an original platen on which a slip or the like to be read can be placed in tight contact. SOLUTION: A plurality of air holes 12 are provided on a surface of an original platen 10 on which an original document to be read is placed, these air holes 12 are divided into a plurality of areas, and an air suction means is provided for each area for sucking air from the air holes 12. After an original document is placed at a predetermined position on the original platen 10, the air suction means corresponding to the respective areas are operated by a control means sequentially from an area including a reference point O toward distant areas. Thus, even an original document having creases or a fold can be placed on the surface of the original platen 10 in tight contact. Furthermore, after the end of reading, air is exhausted from air holes in the area close to an operator to float up a part of the slip, thereby facilitating taking out of the slip.
