PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To securely press a fingertip with a pressure force within a proper range, and to constantly detect a pulse wave of a stable waveform. SOLUTION: The pulse wave detector 1 receives a reflection light L2 of a light L1 irradiating the fingertip F, and detects the pulse wave based on an amount of the received light. The detector includes a light emitting part 10 to emit the light, a light receiving part 11 to receive the reflection light, a movable plate equipped with the light emitting part 10 and the light receiving part 11 that can be pressed up/down by the fingertip, a calculation processing part 3 to detect the pulse wave based on the mount of the received light, a display part 4 to display the detected pulse wave, and a load sensor 5 to detect a press-down load of the fingertip from the pressure force when the fingertip presses the movable plate down. The calculation processing part 3 determines whether the pressing down load is within the predetermined range or not. When the calculation processing part 3 determines that the load is not within the range, the pulse wave detector 1 displays "strong" or "weak" in the pressure force on the display part. When the calculation processing part 3 determines that the load is within the range, the pulse wave detector 1 actuates the light emitting part 10 to start pulse wave detection.
