The invention provides a purified human 38 kD beta cell antigen consisting of an intrinsic transmembrane protein of insulin secretory granules of beta cells lying in pancreatic islets of Langerhans, which protein contains an epitope recognized by T cell clone 1C6 (ECACC No. 1C6 90050301). The antigen may be used to diagnose diabetes in a patient.
