<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To propose control in failure of a shift-by-wire for surely prohibiting travel having a sense of incongruity, while maximizing retreat travel, in failure of the shift-by-wire. <P>SOLUTION: The failure of the shift-by-wire SBW is determined in S12, and a determination is made that a manual valve accurately exists in a range (P, R, N, D) assigning position in S13, and when determining that a select lever position signal Dr commands a travel range in S14, a determination is made on whether or not to be different between the vehicle travel direction by a present state range position Tm of the manual valve unable to perform a stroke by the failure of the shift-by-wire and the vehicle travel direction intended by a driver by the select lever position signal Dr in S15.
