PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock absorbing type steering column device capable of preventing a change in an absorption characteristic of a shock load while aiming to reduce the weight and machining cost. SOLUTION: An energy absorbing member 48 is a steel rod-like member with a rectangular shape in a lateral cross-section. One end side 48b and the other end side 48c in a longitudinal direction of the energy absorbing member are placed on a loading surface 30g. The one end side in a longitudinal direction of the energy absorbing member is sandwiched by fixed members 30h and 30i arranged at one of a vehicle width direction from a vehicle longitudinal direction. The other end side in the longitudinal direction of the energy absorbing member is sandwiched by fixed members 30h and 30i arranged at the other of the vehicle width direction from the vehicle longitudinal direction. Then, a moving member 32d faces to a center part 48a in the longitudinal direction of the energy absorbing member at a rear position in the vehicle longitudinal direction.
