PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a polyester resin, in which a low-molecular weight component such as acetaldehyde was decreased, and effectively usable for molding a heat-resistant container or a container for aseptic packing. SOLUTION: The method for producing the polyester resin consisting mainly of an ethylene terephthalate unit used for molding polyester containers comprises preparing a polyester resin having 0.80-1.0 dl/g intrinsic viscosity by liquid phase and solid phase polymerization and then lowering the intrinsic viscosity of the polyester resin to a range of 5% to 60%.
