PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a soot combustion predicting/detecting method for an exhaust gas economizer capable of detecting and responding to a soot combustion start stage (soot burning) before a soot fire accident occurs. SOLUTION: In the soot combustion predicting/detecting method for the exhaust gas economizer 1, in the exhaust gas economizer 1 provided in a high temperature exhaust gas passage and having a heat transfer pipe 90 for performing exhaust heat recovery from the exhaust gas, based on change in physical quantity, during the exhaust heat recovery, applied to heat exchange fluid sent to the heat transfer pipe 90 via a fluid carrying means and carrying heat obtained by the exhaust heat recovery, combustion of soot adhered to the heat transfer pipe 90 is predicted and/or detected.
