Detector 1 is located a horizontal displacement from buried conductor 25. Two orthogonal antennas B, V, located at the foot of detector 1 in a vertical plane, resolve horizontal and vertical components of the electromagnetic field radiated by conductor 25 and angle r is calculated. Antennas (M, M90, fig. 6), located in the middle of detector 1 in a horizontal plane, measure the resolved horizontal components of the electromagnetic field and a further angle ( d , fig. 6) is calculated. The angles and other parameters show that detector 1 is aligned with conductor 25 and that the depth calculation is accurate before it is displayed. In a further embodiment a plurality of antennas (B, M, T, fig. 3) compensate common mode field distortion due to the complex impedance of the material in which conductor 25 is buried. |
