AMINOIMINOQUINONE AND AMINOQUININE ALKALOID COMPOUNDS AS CAPASE INHIBITORS

The subject application concerns novel compounds of structural formula (I) wherein R1 is NH or O; R2 is OZ; R3 is OZ; R4 is H or R; R5 is NH2, NR2, or OZ; and R6 is H or X; wherein Z is selected from th e group consisting of H, R, COR, mesyl, tosyl, glutamyl, succinyl, and malonyl; R is selected from the group consisting of C1 to C8 alkyl, phenyl, and benzyl; and X is C1, Br, or I, with useful biological properties. For example, theses compounds can be used as anti- inflammatory, anti-proliferative, immunomodulatory, and/or neuroprotective agents. Specific examples of the compounds of the subject invention include Secobatzelline A and Secobatzelline B, which can be isolated from marine sponges.
