An image forming apparatus and a control method thereof are provided to satisfy a power consumption limiting condition while exactly detecting a phase of power in a standby mode. An image forming unit forms an image. A switching unit selectively transfers supplied power to the image forming unit. A controller controls the switching unit based on a phase signal of the power. A power cut-off unit blocks the power from being transferred to the image forming unit in the standby mode. A phase detector(104) detects a phase of the power by different phase detection paths in normal mode and standby mode.
