Disclosed is a solid polymer electrolyte membrane for a polymer electrolyte fuel cell, which is hardly broken when undergoes repeated swelling in a wet state and shrinkage in a dried state in spite of containing a fluorinated polymer. Also disclosed is a membrane electrode assembly having the solid polymer electrolyte membrane. Specifically disclosed are: a solid polymer electrolyte membrane (15) having a tensile stress at yield of 5.5 MPa or less as determined by an evaluation method in accordance with JIS K 7161-1994 based on a tensile stress-strain curve produced according to a tensile test method in accordance with JIS K 7161-1994 at a temperature of 80°C and a deformation rate of 1/min.; and a membrane electrode assembly (10) comprising an anode (13) having a catalyst layer (11), a cathode (14) having a catalyst layer and the solid polymer electrolyte membrane (15) provided between the anode (13) and the cathode (14). |
