A fluid system such as a fire sprinkler system or a device such as a pressur e reducing valve is tested by fitting to the system or device at least one outlet device whose characteristics are known, causing fluid to flow under test conditions, and measuring the fluid flow through the outlet device to give an indication of which flow would take place under normal operating conditions. The outlet device may be a flow restrictor.
