A method of preparing a positive electrode active material for a rechargeable lithium battery is provided to reduce production costs by simplifying a manufacturing process and to obtain a positive electrode active material with electrochemical property of the equal level to the positive electrode active material prepared by a wet method. A method of preparing a positive electrode active material for a rechargeable lithium battery comprises the steps of: adding phosphoric acid to dispersion of transition metal oxide to prepare coating solution; drying the coating solution to produce powder coated with phosphate on the surface of transition metal oxides; dry-mixing the powder coated with phosphate and the lithium intercalation compound, and calcining the mixture to prepare Li-M1-M2-P-O solid solution compound on the lithium intercalation compound.
