Disclosed is a method of protecting wood, through enhanced penetration of wood preservatives, comprising providing a solution containing at least one amine oxide, at least one wood preservative, and a buffering agent, the solution having a pH between 5 and 12.4, applying the solution to the surface of the wood, and activating the amine oxide. Also disclosed is a solution suitable for the above method.
