A backlight compensating apparatus of a camera and a method thereof for efficiently preventing phenomenon that there is crab of the camera are provided to take a picture of a subject of proper intensity by outputting synthesized image by a long shutter speed. Shutter speed of an image pickup device is varied to the long shutter speed and short shutter speed in a backlight photographic mode. The image photographed by the long shutter speed and the image photographed by the short shutter speed are synthesized. The synthesized image is outputted. The long shutter speed and short shutter speed are performed in a variable step. The digital gain up operation is performed about the image photographed by the long shutter speed.
