The method involves bringing an initially stopped internal combustion engine (1) to a sufficient rotational speed by action of electric machines (2a, 2b) i.e. motor, connected to variable infinite transmission (4) during operating phases so as to permit the engine to participate in the propulsion of a vehicle. The machines in open loop are controlled with respect to power provided by an electric storage element (3) such that rotation speed of the engine is increased to a stored value, in one of the operating phases when the rotation speed of the engine is less than the stored value. An independent claim is also included for a system for controlling starting of an internal combustion engine in hybrid drive train of a motor vehicle, comprising rotational speed estimation unit.
