PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent degradation in display quality by gradually changing the luminance of a black display, in a plasma display apparatus. SOLUTION: The plasma display apparatus performs light emission display, by providing an initializing period for applying an all-cell initializing pulse for generating initializing discharge in all discharge cells; an address period for selecting a discharge cell for emitting light; a maintaining period for performing maintaining discharge, by means of the discharge cell selected during this address period. A video period in which the lighting proportion of at least one sub-field of one field exceeds threshold is provided with an initialization period for applying the all-cell initializing pulse. A non-video period in which the lighting proportion of all the sub-fields of one field is not higher than the threshold is provided with a period for stopping the application of the all-cell initializing pulse. In addition, a period for reducing the voltage for the all-cell initializing pulse is provided, prior to the period which stops, by fields. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
