PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator provided with an elevator vibration damping device arranged in such a place that the amount of displacement of a weight in a direction perpendicular to a damping direction is reduced and vibration generated from each portion of the elevator is efficiently and certainly reduced by damping force. SOLUTION: This elevator includes: a car 16; a hoist 11; a counterweight W; a sheave on the side of the car, suspending the car 16; a hoisting rope 15 wound around a traction sheave, and having one end suspending the car through the sheave on the side of the car and the other end suspending the counterweight W; and the elevator vibration damping device 21 provided with an elastic body displaceably supporting the weight at least partially having a magnetic body in a casing attached to a vibration damping object, and having spring constant in a damping direction set to a magnitude of less than a spring constant in a direction perpendicular to the damping direction, and an electromagnet arranged oppositely to the weight, and applying the damping force to the vibration damping object by moving the weight in the damping direction by exertion of the electromagnetic force of the electromagnet on the magnetic body.
