PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine surely whether a liquid, containing a reagent or a specimen, is dispensed as much as a liquid quantity set, in advance, for each analysis item. SOLUTION: This automatic analyzer for generating reaction by stirring liquid containing a reagent or a specimen held in a reaction container 40, and analyzing the liquid by measuring the optical characteristics of the reaction liquid, is equipped with an ultrasonic wave irradiation part 38 for irradiating ultrasonic waves toward the surface of the liquid held in the reaction container 40, and receiving the ultrasonic wave reflected by the liquid surface; and a dispensation determining part 44 for determining the height of the liquid, based on the time difference between transmitted and received signals of the ultrasonic waves irradiated by the ultrasonic wave irradiating part 38, calculating the liquid quantity based on the height, and determines that an abnormality occurs in dispensation, when the calculated liquid quantity is not in a range of a specified quantity, set beforehand, for each analysis item.
