PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 4-amino-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine at a moderate pressure, enabling to produce 4-amino-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine exhibiting such coloring stability that the chemical has an APHA value of <20 even after storing for 6 months. SOLUTION: The method for producing 4-amino-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine involves reacting 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-4-one, ammonia and hydrogen in the presence of a nickel or cobalt catalyst and water, carrying out the major reaction at the maximum pressure of 50 bar and the maximum temperature of 120°C until the conversion of 2,2,6,6-tetrapiperidine-4-one becomes at least 80%, and then continuously carrying out the post-reaction at a temperature and pressure higher than those in the major reaction.
