PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a driving method for a plasma display panel that suppresses heat generation of a Y driving circuit even when the display pattern of the plasma display panel changes to a lateral band pattern, and to provide a plasma display apparatus. SOLUTION: The driving method for the plasma display panel 10 includes: detecting from an input data an address switching load by counting the number of times that an address pulse applied to an address electrode Aj is switched on/off; detecting a display switching load between the adjacent address data by counting the number of times that the on and off signals, adjacent to each other, of the address pulse are output between the adjacent address electrodes; and exerting control such that if the address switching load is a predetermined first threshold or above and the display switching load between the adjacent address data is a predetermined second threshold or below, part of a sub-field SF is eliminated and the number of sub-fields is decreased.
