PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a muffler superior in durability, capable of restraining a radiation sound without generating an abnormal sound such as a chattering sound, and capable of preventing deformation of a shell by evaporation of moisture between plate materials. SOLUTION: This muffler 1 has the shell 2 superposably wound with the plate materials 21. The shell 2 is constituted by at least doubly superposably winding the plate materials 21 over the whole periphery in the winding direction of the plate materials 21, and a rib 24 projecting outside is formed in the winding direction from the winding start end 22 of the plate materials 21, and a clearance 25 opening on the winding start end 22 of the rib 24 and closed in an external part of the shell 2, is formed along the rib 24.
