PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a document from being left untaken and to automatically select a document read mode or user operation mode by reading the document on a display screen of a console panel using an area sensor. SOLUTION: A document reading apparatus includes a united display unit 401 provided with an area sensor unit 401b in one body and a main CPU 101 which controls screen display of the united display unit 401, and the area sensor unit 401b detects reflected light from an object mounted on the screen of the united display unit 401. A main CPU 101 determines whether the object is a document on the basis of an area of the reflected light from the object that the area sensor unit 401b detects, and sets the document read mode wherein the document mounted on the screen is read by the area sensor unit 401b when the object is determined to be the document.
