PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an atomic oscillator having high precision and low power consumption by improving a Q value by reducing optical intensity to reduce the full width at half maximum of an EIT signal, and by improving a S/N ratio. SOLUTION: This atomic oscillator includes an LD 53 to emit each kind of resonance light, a resonance gas cell 58 to pass each kind of resonance light in a metal atom gas, a PD 55 to detect transmitting light 1, a beat component detecting means 2 to detect a difference frequency beat component in a received photoelectric current, a detecting means 3 to detect the amplitude level of the difference frequency beat component detected by the beat component detecting means 2, a frequency control means 59 to generate the control voltage of a crystal oscillator 60 based on the detected output of the detecting means 3, the crystal oscillator 60 to oscillate a predetermined frequency based on the control voltage generated from the frequency control means 59, and a modulating means 61 to modulate the dc current of the LD (coherent light source) 53 by a modulation frequencyω<SB>m</SB>generated by synthesizing and multiplying the oscillating frequency of the crystal oscillator 60.
