PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a user to judge whether the category is necessary for him and to immediately reach a representative document. SOLUTION: A directory information access means 11 gains access to a directory information storage device 16 for storing directory information showing a corresponding relation between a category name and the hierarchical structure of the category and a document belonging to the category, and a document information access means 12 gains access to a document information storage device 17 for preliminarily storing a corresponding relation between the document name and the document score and the document. A representative document selection means 23 selects the representative document of each category to be displayed as a retrieval result based on information acquired by the directory information access means 11 and the document information access means 12. A retrieval means 14 retrieves the category in which a character string matched with a retrieval keyword input from a user is included from the directory information. A retrieval result compounding means 25 associates the retrieval result of a retrieval means 14 with a document selected by the representative document selection means 23.
