PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming device which correctly manages the life of consumables, and to provide a method of managing the life of consumables. SOLUTION: When an exchanged consumable is a secondhand fixing unit, a user confirms the defective condition such as peeling off, crack, contact streak and so on the surface of a fixing roller of the exchanged fixing unit by a visual observation, and an appearance information that shows the appearance state resulting from the confirmation is input (Step S150). According to the input appearance information, the life remaining in the exchanged fixing unit is estimated (Step S160), and the life for the exchanged consumables is set according to the estimation result (Step S190).
