PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid discharge apparatus whose carriage can be locked while its cost and size are reduced, and to provide a printer. SOLUTION: The printer includes: the carriage 17 capable of reciprocation; a print head 14 mounted in the carriage 17; and a wiping mechanism 50 which causes a wiper 61 to move from a retreat position away from the path of movement of the print head 14 moving along with the carriage 17, to a wiping position close to the path of movement of the print head 14, to bring the wiper 61 into contact with a nozzle formation surface where a nozzle of the print head 14 moved along with the carriage 17 is provided, to wipe the surface clean. The wiping mechanism 40 has a slider 62 for supporting the wiper 61. The slider 62 is formed with an engaging section 63a which engages the carriage 17 by moving to the wiping position to restrict the movement of the carriage 17. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
