<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display unit, for writing characters and images by tracing on the display surface with a sharp-pointed tool such as a pen, without damaging easiness. <P>SOLUTION: In an HPF section 41, an HPF image 41A is generated after a non-detection object image is eliminated from an imaged image 33A. In a binary section 42, a binary image 42A is generated through binary processing for the HPF image 41A. In a peak detection section 43, by use of the binary image 42A as a mask, an image 33-1 in an area corresponding to the opening of the mask is extracted from the imaged image 33A, and from the image 33-1, a peak value Pm and the position of a peak pixel 33m are detected. In a decision section 44, based on the relationship of magnitude between a difference Δp and a threshold TH1, the existence or non-existence of the detection object contacting to a display surface 10 is decided.
