PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent trouble accompanying the deterioration of a sewing needle form occurring by automatically determining the damaged state of the sewing needle without depending on a visual check or judgement by a user. SOLUTION: In a controlling apparatus of a sewing machine, image sensors 17 and 18 photograph the image of the sewing needle 7, and the shape data of the sewing needle 7 is extracted from the image data by an image processing circuit. Then, the controlling apparatus obtains dimensions of each part of the sewing needle 7 from the shape data of the sewing needle 7, and determines whether there are abnormal values in the dimensions or not. When there is an abnormal value (a bent deformation abnormality of the sewing needle 7, or a crush or break abnormality of the distal end of the sewing needle 7), a message indicating the abnormality in the sewing needle 7 and suggesting the replacement is displayed on a screen of a liquid crystal display 20, and at the same time, a buzzer is made to sound to report the abnormality.
