PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device of an internal combustion engine capable of restraining the deterioration in a combustion state in an operation cylinder, by controlling an opening-closing characteristic of an engine valve in a characteristic suitable for combustion in the operation cylinder, even when performing any of whole cylinder operation and cylinder resting operation. SOLUTION: When performing the whole cylinder operation, an ignition timing advance quantity being an operation command value of a variable valve train 13 is calculated so as to become a value suitable for the whole cylinder operation. Thus, the variable valve train 13 is operated based on its ignition timing advance quantity, and the valve timing of an intake valve 9 can be set in an optimal state for the combustion in the operation cylinder in the whole cylinder operation. When performing the cylinder resting operation, the ignition timing advance quantity is calculated so as to become a value suitable for the cylinder resting operation. Thus, the variable valve train 13 is operated based on its ignition timing advance quantity, and the valve timing of the intake valve 9 can be set in an optimal state for the combustion in the operation cylinder in the cylinder resting operation.
