PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for accurately estimating a cylinder intake air amount and calculating an appropriate smoke limit injection amount in a control system of an internal combustion engine, including an EGR system in which an HPLEGR device and an LPLEGR device are juxtaposed, for performing fuel injection control for limiting a fuel injection amount according to the smoke limit injection amount defined based on the cylinder intake air amount. SOLUTION: The control system includes the HPLEGR device, the LPLEGR device, and an air-flow meter. Based on a measurement of an air amount by the air-flow meter, an LPLEGR gas amount, and a volume of an air-intake system area which is an area of an air-intake passage from an LPLEGR gas in-flow port to an HPLEGR gas in-flow port, the control system estimates an air amount inside the air-intake system area. Based on the estimation of the air amount inside the air-intake area, the control system estimates a cylinder intake air amount. The control system calculates a smoke limit injection amount based on the estimation of the cylinder intake air amount and performs control to limit a fuel injection amount so that it does not exceed the calculated smoke limit injection amount.
