PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently desulfurizing molten pig iron, which can enhance the efficiency of a desulfurization reaction compared to a conventional method without needing a new cost for remodeling a facility, when desulfurizing the molten pig iron while using a mechanically stirring type desulfurization device. SOLUTION: The method for desulfurizing the molten pig iron includes desulfurizing the molten pig iron by adding a CaO-based desulfurization agent 6 which has been divided into three or more stages onto the top of the hot pig iron that is stirred by an impeller 4 at an interval of three minutes or longer, when desulfurizing the hot pig iron 3 in the mechanically stirring type desulfurization apparatus while using the CaO-based desulfurizing agent.
