PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To give a warning to passengers getting on and off at a landing area by illuminating the vicinity of the landing area irrespective of the size or layout of a passenger conveyor. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display 10 having two action modes of an "illumination mode" and an "operation mode" is installed in the vicinity of the landing area of a parapet 8. The liquid crystal display 10 is operated in the "illumination mode" in the normal operation of an escalator, and functions as an illumination device for illuminating the vicinity of the landing area. When an operation of the escalator is necessary, the liquid crystal display 10 is operated in the "operation mode" to function as an operation board by collecting various operation switches.
