PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lightweight material having a small particle size irrespective of having a low absolute dry density. SOLUTION: An apparatus for producing the lightweight material by firing expansible shale and/or expanded clay comprises a rotary kiln for heating provided with a burner, a dust collector for catching dust in an exhaust gas derived from the rotary kiln for heating, a processing unit of an acid gas and/or dioxins in the exhaust gas from the dust collector, a raw material feeding means which is disposed at the side where the burner is arranged in the rotary kiln for heating and feeds a raw material containing expansible shale and/or expanded clay, a cooler arranged at the discharge side of a fired product, an apparatus for feeding a cooler exhaust gas to the burner side, a temperature sensor for detecting a raw material temperature in the rotary kiln for heating, and a burner combustion amount controller for controlling the combustion amount in a burner based on the raw material temperature detected by the temperature sensor.
