The system (1) has a coupling rod (3) i.e. rack and pinion, whose one end is connected to a piston of a piston cylinder unit and is translationally movable in a direction of longitudinal axis. A shaft has a wheel (4) i.e. toothed wheel, in which the rod is engaged, where the wheel is rotatably supported by the shaft and an axis of rotation (6) of wheel stays perpendicularly to the axis. A sensor (8) is arranged such that the sensor measures a change of magnetic field produced by a magnet (5) that is rotatably connected to the wheel during rotation of wheel around the axis of rotation. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a piston cylinder unit comprising a coupling rod (2) a method for detecting position of a piston of a piston cylinder unit.
