PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus, capable of obtaining an image of high quality by preventing contamination or detection failure of an optical sensor for detecting a toner adhesion quantity by scattering of toner, and enhancing the accuracy of toner density adjustment. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 for forming a toner image by adhering toner to an electrostatic latent image formed on an image carrier 11, 31 includes an optical sensor 61 which detects a toner adhesion quantity on a toner image that is a reference pattern formed on the image carrier 11, 31 for detecting the toner adhesion quantity, and an ultrasonic vibration generator 63 which vibrates the optical sensor 61.
